What Is Blackjack?
Blackjack is one of the most popular casino card games in the world, largely because it combines straightforward rules with genuine strategic depth. Unlike many casino games that rely purely on luck, blackjack allows players to influence outcomes through decision-making — which is why understanding the rules and basic strategy is so valuable.
The Core Objective

- You make decisions based on your hand and the dealer's visible card.
- Dealer reveals the hole card and plays according to fixed rules (usually hitting until reaching 17 or above).
- Outcome is determined — closest to 21 without busting wins.
Player Decisions
- Hit: Take another card to increase your total.
- Stand: Keep your current hand and end your turn.
- Double Down: Double your bet and receive exactly one more card. Best used when you have a strong starting total (like 10 or 11).
- Split: If you have two cards of the same value, split them into two separate hands — each requiring a matching second bet.
- Surrender: Available in some variants — forfeit half your bet and end the round early if your hand looks unfavourable.
Basic Strategy: The Foundation of Smart Play
Basic strategy is a mathematically derived set of decisions that minimises the house edge over time. Here are the core principles:
- Always stand on 17 or higher.
- Always hit on 8 or below.
- Double down on 11 against most dealer upcards.
- Split Aces and 8s — always. Never split 5s or 10s.
- Stand on hard 12–16 when the dealer shows 2–6 (dealer is likely to bust).
- Hit on hard 12–16 when the dealer shows 7 or higher.
Understanding the House Edge
Blackjack typically has one of the lowest house edges of any casino game — often under 1% when basic strategy is applied correctly. The exact edge depends on the specific rules in play, such as how many decks are used and whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17.
Common Blackjack Variants
- European Blackjack: Dealer doesn't receive a hole card until after player decisions.
- Spanish 21: All 10s removed from the deck; players get bonus payouts for special hands.
